We chose Domes of Elounda to celebrate our twentieth wedding anniversary, and after months of researching hotels across Crete, it was the resort's relaxed aesthetic, family-friendly accommodation and beautiful setting overlooking Spinalonga that kept drawing us back. Being just a short walk from Plaka was also a huge advantage, allowing us to enjoy authentic tavernas in the evenings without relying on transport.
From the moment we arrived, it felt as though every member of staff genuinely wanted us to have the best possible holiday. We were incredibly grateful to be upgraded to a One Bedroom Residence with a private pool, and the bottle of Prosecco waiting for us was such a thoughtful anniversary surprise.
The accommodation was exceptional. Travelling as a family of four, having generous indoor living space, a private pool and an outdoor kitchen completely changed the way we holidayed. We enjoyed relaxed lunches on our terrace overlooking the sea, something that quickly became part of our daily routine. The room itself was beautifully maintained throughout our stay, and our housekeeper deserves a special mention. Nothing was ever too much trouble, extra water, additional blankets to make the sofa bed more comfortable.
As an interior designer, I couldn't help but admire how thoughtfully the resort has been designed. The architecture sits beautifully within the landscape, with low planting carefully preserving uninterrupted views towards the sea. The combination of soft terracotta tones, natural stone and striking black architectural detailing creates a timeless Mediterranean palette that feels sophisticated without ever becoming formal. It perfectly captures what I would describe as relaxed luxury.
The facilities were equally impressive. Although the beach is relatively small, it was impeccably clean and never felt overcrowded. Around the pools, we always managed to find a sunbed, with plenty of natural shade throughout the day. Our boys loved the Teen Room, particularly the PlayStation area, football table and snooker, and I appreciated the simple addition of complimentary chilled water, it meant they actually stayed hydrated!
The concierge team also went above and beyond. Unfortunately, many of the restaurants were already fully booked when we arrived, but they worked incredibly hard to secure cancellations and alternative reservations throughout the week. They even arranged for us to enjoy lunch in one of the restaurants that was unavailable for dinner, ensuring we still experienced it.
Breakfast was plentiful, although during peak season the buffet became extremely busy. An additional serving station and a larger made-to-order chef section would make the experience feel much calmer. Similarly, I would love to see the signature Core restaurant open throughout the week, as we only managed to dine there once during our seven-night stay because it was closed on several evenings. It deserves to be enjoyed more often.
We also spent several evenings in nearby Plaka and visited Agios Nikolaos, both of which offered fantastic restaurants and some of the freshest seafood we enjoyed all week. Combined with the enchanting views across to Spinalonga, the location really is difficult to beat.
Domes of Elounda succeeds because it understands that true luxury isn't about excess—it's about thoughtful design, genuine hospitality and spaces that allow families to completely unwind. We arrived hoping for a memorable anniversary and left with a holiday we'll remember for years.
Would we return? Without hesitation. It's a place I'd happily recommend to families, couples and anyone who appreciates beautiful design delivered with warmth rather than formality.
